Jack Register is a licensed clinical social worker and the founder and clinical director of Catharsis Counseling Center, seeing clients at the practice’s Phoenix office and by telehealth across Arizona, New York, and North Carolina. He has worked across the life span with people facing what he calls co-occurring or intersecting disorders — mental health challenges, addictive disorders both process and substance, and experiences of covert and overt trauma — and the working premise is that those are one problem rather than three. He is dually licensed in mental health and in addiction care, and treats both substance and behavioral addiction, including gambling, gaming, shopping, problematic pornography use, and sexual acting out. He sees adults 18 and up, individually, as couples, and in groups.
Jack is openly LGBTQIA+ and has extensive experience working with trans, nonbinary, gender fluid, and queer clients. He specializes in working with people who experienced faith abuse at the hands of religious communities that pushed conversion strategies to change who they are — work that sits where religious trauma, identity, and the addiction and trauma he already treats run into each other.
Who we have had to be in the past had no bearing on who we become in the future.
Jack describes himself as a guide through the process of change. He works through what he calls holistic therapies — Mindfulness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Family Systems, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Gestalt, Narrative Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, and Post Induction Therapy (PIT) — with the goal of bringing the nervous system into balance and giving the client room to build a life that is intentional and forward looking. Post Induction Therapy, the model he trained in at The Meadows, reads adult symptoms such as addiction and codependence as carried consequences of childhood relational trauma, which is why addiction, trauma, and self-esteem tend to be worked on together in his room rather than in sequence. He offers therapy to individuals, couples, and families, is available most weekdays, and has some evening appointments.
Jack received his MSW in 2000 from the joint program between North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and is currently a doctoral student at Yeshiva University studying social welfare and social work. He is licensed as a clinical social worker in Arizona, New York, and North Carolina, holds the LCAS and CCS addiction credentials in North Carolina, is a Licensed Independent Addiction Counselor, and is a board-approved supervisor for both of his Arizona licenses. He trained at The Meadows in Post Induction Therapy and became a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional through PESI. Individual sessions are $165 and couple sessions $200, with a sliding scale available on application.
