Emily Maynard is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and an EMDRIA-certified EMDR therapist, seeing adults by telehealth across California. Her practice centers on religious trauma — the anxiety, shame, and complex trauma responses that can outlast the beliefs themselves.
She works with exvangelicals, religious trauma survivors, purity culture dropouts, and people in the middle of faith transition or deconstruction. In her own words, she helps smart, sensitive people rewrite harmful stories from the past, reduce triggers and shame, tame anxiety, and live with more peace and confidence.
Therapy is the realm of imagination and possibility, not just limited fixes for prescriptive diagnoses.
Emily has been certified in EMDR through EMDRIA since 2023 and uses it to help clients process traumatic memory and reduce the trauma responses that keep the past close. Alongside EMDR she draws on narrative therapy, feminist and postmodern theory, solution-focused interventions, somatic work, and attachment-based, trauma-informed care. She has completed California's 40-hour domestic violence certification training and the narrative therapy training program at the Pepperdine Community Counseling Center.
Her style is direct and challenging. She describes herself as a directive, modern therapist who notices patterns and gives feedback, and her stated aim is for clients to embody their values rather than their past. She has been in practice for eight years, is accepting new clients, and offers a free 15-minute consultation.
Emily earned a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pepperdine University and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Hillsdale College. She is licensed in California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, and Utah; her Tandem listing covers California.
