Bio

Dr. Angela Horng is a licensed clinical psychologist working by telehealth with young adults and adults, licensed in both California and New York. She practices at Untangled Threads Psychology, a small culturally-sensitive practice built around the idea that culture, heritage, and history are not background details to therapy — they are part of the work.

A second-generation Taiwanese American raised in the Bay Area, she draws on her own experience of navigating multiple cultural identities, and of being raised in an immigrant family with high expectations of success. The clients she sits with are often carrying internalized perfectionism, fear of failure, and the weight of family and societal pressure — pressure that shows up as low mood, anxiety, and a corroded sense of self-worth long before anyone names it.

I bring a warm, direct approach — what I call “fiercely warm” — to help you uncover your strengths with compassion and accountability.

Her clinical focus is attachment and early relational trauma: understanding how past experiences are shaping a client's present relationship with themselves, with other people, and with their own emotions, then working out together how to break the patterns that no longer serve them. That work extends to generational and intergenerational trauma, including the quieter injuries — a consistent lack of emotional safety growing up rather than a single identifiable event.

She also works with neurodivergence and executive functioning, an area where presentations in BIPOC communities are often missed or misread by clinicians from other cultural backgrounds. Alongside that, she sees clients for anxiety, depression, family conflict, and relational difficulty.

Her approach combines attachment-focused work with Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, DBT, and somatic technique, held inside a multicultural, person-centered frame. She describes therapy as a relationship like any other, where knowing what is helpful and unhelpful for a particular client is the thing that makes it work — so she is collaborative first, and explicit that therapy is not one-size-fits-all. She is also not a passive listener: her style is direct and challenging, and she will reflect and push as much as she supports.

Dr. Horng earned a BS in Psychobiology from UCLA and a PhD from Palo Alto University with a specialty in Diversity and Community Mental Health. She has provided therapy to youth and adults across community mental health organizations and university counseling centers, including the University of Arizona and San Jose State University, and is active in cultural advocacy and mental health awareness work aimed at reducing stigma in diverse communities.
